Training, take the line for a walk

Before I knew myself like now, I believed that some things were and would be immutable. I thought the tastes would not change, either the sensations… Luckily, I love to explore and get dirty my hands. I did not get stuck in that imaginary limit.

Antes de conocerme como ahora, creía que algunas cosas eran y serían inmutables. Que los gustos no cambiarían, ni las sensaciones… Por suerte me encanta explorar y mancharme las manos y no me quedé en ese límite imaginario.

Some experiences make me aware of this change like the rediscovery of drawing using a single line, as did Giacometti.

Una de las experiencias que me han hecho consciente de este cambio, ha sido el redescubrimiento del boceto de una sóla línea, como hacía Giacometti.

The first time someone proposed that was in the School of Illustration. Then, the exercise of drawing without lifting the pencil from the paper, I felt it uncomfortable, the results and the sensation when I had been drawing did not convince me anything.

La primera vez que me propusieron en la Escuela de Ilustración este ejercicio de dibujar sin levantar el lápiz del papel ni una sola vez, me pareció incómodo, los resultados y la sensación dibujando no me convencieron nada.

With Mariajo I tried again, and the feeling had not changed. I thought that technique was not for me. Ha,ha,ha!

Con Mariajo lo volví a intentar, y la sensación no había cambiado. Creía que esa técnica no era para mí ¡Ja!

I thought that until I joined the course with Adolfo Serra on Domestika. The teacher proposes this exercise to training our line of the drawing. Adolfo convinced me and I decided to give it another chance, explore and play with it…

Hasta que me apunté al curso de Domestika con Adolfo Serra, uno de los ejercicios que propone es este. Adolfo me convenció y decidí darle otra oportunidad, explorar y jugar…

… and, Oh surprise! Not only I feel comfortable drawing with a single line. I believe that the result, somehow, contains the essence of the portrayed. And I have not achieved this with other drawing techniques, until now.

…y ¡oh, sorpresa! No solo me sentí cómoda, sino que el resultado de alguna manera contenía la esencia del retratado, cosa que con otras técnicas de dibujo no he conseguido, hasta ahora.

Thanks Adolfo for re-proposing this challenge and for the course, that although I still have not been able to get all the juice I want, I know I will do it even if it’s in small bits 🙂

My new color palette, after reading to Felix Scheinberger

As I told you when I was in Huelva at Susana’s workshop, Gustavo told us with emotion that for the new season he had been able to take El Taller Artístico workshop to Felix Scheinberger.

Como te dije estando en Huelva en el taller de Susana, Gustavo nos comentó con emoción que para la nueva temporada había conseguido llevar a El Taller Artístico a Felix Scheinberger.

I remember clearly when Gustavo held out me the book Urban Watercolor Sketching. I felt trapped. I told him: Please, Gustavo, I do not want to lose it!!. The vacancies flew, but C and I have ours. And I’m dying to grow, learn and shelter (I want to say… enjoy ;P)

Recuerdo con nitidez a Gustavo tendiéndome el libro Acuarela Para Urbansketchers y sentirme atrapada. Por favor, Gustavo, ¡¡no me lo quiero perder!! Las plazas volaron, pero C y yo tenemos la nuestra. Y me muero de ganas por conocerle, aprender y guarrear (digooooo… disfrutar ;P)

On the way home I eat up the book and got a lot of ideas like when it occurred to me to use your idea of making stamps with potatoes to spread my stamps and use them with watercolors.

De vuelta a casa devoré el libro y saqué un montón de pequeñas ideas como cuando se me ocurrió usar su idea de hacer sellos con patatas para untar mis sellos y poder usarlos con acuarelas.

The topic I want to talk about in this post starts when I was while reading the book, Felix talks a lot about color and going with eyes wide open to create our own color palettes, and illustrates transitions from one color to another. From the palette to find new colors, the example of the book is from ocher to turquoise, two of my favorite colors and I use more in my palette, I tried it and then I wanted to make a color chart of transitions of all my box of watercolors.

Lo que en este post quiero contarte empezó mientras leía el libro, Felix habla mucho acerca del color y de ir con los ojos bien abiertos a crearnos nuestras propias paletas de color, e ilustra transiciones de un color a otro de la paleta para encontrar nuevos colores, el ejemplo del libro es desde el ocre al turquesa, dos de mis colores favoritos y que más utilizo en mi paleta, lo probé y entonces quise hacerme una carta de color de transiciones de toda mi caja de acuarelas.

I prepared transitions of 14 dots, using permutations of all my watercolors.

Preparé transiciones de 14 puntitos, utilizando permutaciones de todas mis acuarelas.

The experiment took more than a week while drying and I do other jobs.

El experimento me llevó más de una semana, mientras secaban y hacía otros trabajos.

The best thing about this experiment is that I discovered new skin colors, different from the ones I already use.

Lo mejor de este experimento es que descubrí nuevos colores para piel, diferentes de los que ya uso.

Errors that makes me fall me in love.

Errores que enamoran.

And new colors that I love that have been created from mixtures that I would never have thought to mix if not for this methodical process.

Y nuevos colores que me enamoran que se han creado a partir de mezclas que nunca se me hubiera ocurrido mezclar si no es por este metódico proceso.

Finally, and although it seems obvious, I had not noticed the texture, the grain left by the blues, which I believed to be my palette (I use these Cotman watercolors from Windsor and Newton) and that a few days ago I discovered on the Instagram of Iraville. She loves that effect and she uses other different watercolors, so I have come to the conclusion that it is the blue pigment, so any mix you make using blue (especially with the ultramarine blue) will have this very unique effect.

Por último, y aunque parezca obvio, no había notado la textura, el grano que dejan los azules, que creía propios de mi paleta (yo uso estas acuarelas Cotman de Windsor and Newton) y que hace unos días descubrí en el instagram de Iraville. Ella ama ese efecto y ella usa otras acuarelas diferentes, por lo que he llegado a la conclusión que es el pigmento azul, así que toda mezcla que hagas usando azul (sucede especialmente con el azul ultramar) tendrá este efecto tan característico.

New toy, the kneadable graphite water-soluble

I do not know anyone yet, who after watching this video did not want to try that ball. I warn you before you play and/or keep reading.

No conozco a nadie aún que, tras ver este video, no haya deseado probar esa bola. Te advierto antes de que le des al play y/o sigas leyendo.

I was lucky and was near to Christmas. I do not doubt including «the ball» as we call this kneadable graphite water-soluble, in my letter to Santa. We await the delivery as little children. This time I was not the only one nervous about an art supplies delivery. You can imagine that the postman who gave me the package knew that something special for me by the glow of my eyes.

En mi caso tuve suerte y las Navidades estaban cerca. Sin dudar incluí en mi carta a Sus Majestades de Oriente la que en casa llamamos «la bola». Esperamos su llegada con ilusión infantil. Normalmente suelo ser la única nerviosa ante la llegada de un paquete de material, pero esta vez no era la única. Estoy segura de que el cartero que me dio el paquete sabía que algo especial para mí por el brillo de mis ojos.

«The ball» is even softer than I imagined and a bit more than a kneaded rubber eraser. Dirty everything you can imagine and a little more, but use it wearing gloves is not the same, especially if you love to take the graphite of your fingers on paper, but this is a personal taste.

Viarco no me patrocina esta entrada, pero desde aquí les digo que estaré encantada de deborar más grafito, y el suyo es de los mejores que he probado.
La bola es aún más blanda de lo que imaginaba, un poco más que una goma maleable. Mancha todo lo que te imagines y un poquito más, pero usarla con guantes no es lo mismo, sobre todos si te encanta aprovechar el grafito de tus dedos en el papel, pero esto es un gusto personal.

I started working dry, and here for me, it gains the «finger» work versus working directly with the material on paper.

Empecé trabajándola en seco, y aquí para mí gana el trabajo «digital» frente a trabajar directamente con el material sobre el papel.

In wet, it gives a very deep gray that has me crazy and that when drying remains graphite with its brightness <3

En húmedo, da un gris profundísimo que me tiene loca y que al secar sigue siendo grafito con su brillo <3

Here also see what happens by applying a damp ball that is drying. Under that, the degrading with the wet finger. In this case, the degradation is shorter because the pigment is lost almost completely in the wet phase.

Aquí puedes ver qué sucede aplicando una bola húmeda que se va secando. Debajo degradando con el dedo húmedo. En este último caso el degradado es menor pues el pigmento se pierde casi por completo en la fase húmeda.

On the left, I’ve drawn with the ball dry and over that, painted with watercolor. On the right, I’ve painted with watercolor and over that, made a watery with the ball of graphite.

Aquí he probado la diferencia de aplicar grafito con «la bola» y encima una aguada de acuarela (izquierda) frente a una aguada de acuarela que una vez seca le he aplicado una aguada con el grafito de «la bola» (derecha).

I made a video, as Laura request. You can see working with the ball dry. I hope you can get the idea of what the «ball» is.

A petición de Laura he hecho un video. El trabajo es en seco pero puedes hacerte a la idea de cómo es «la bola».

The ball is as funny as it seems, or more. And when you work from the enjoy the result is amazing. This is not an indispensable tool. It is a very interesting gift for any illustrator who likes to play with his hands.

La bola es tan divertida como parece o más, y cuando trabajas desde lo lúdico el resultado es increíble, así que aunque no sea una herramienta indispensable, sí me parece un regalo muy interesante para cualquier ilustrador que le guste guarrear con las manos.

Sorbitos de felicidad

Un día comentando agobiada, como pollo sin cabeza: «No hago nada, no me cunden nada los días«, alguien me propuso hacer una lista de todas las cosas que hacía a lo largo del día. Y funcionó. Me sentí menos agobiada, y fui consciente de la cantidad de cosas que hacía, y habían pasado invisibles a mis ojos, pero que pesaban en forma de cansancio en mi cuerpo.

Sigo utilizando ese método, cuando mi cerebro se rebela, y cree que no hace nada. Lo he ido mejorando para también saber en dónde y qué se me escapa el tiempo.

Hace unos días me encontré pensando de manera pesimista y triste. Y creeme no me siento identificada para nada con esa visión de lo que me rodea. En parte me sentía alienada, y empezaba a no reconocerme en ese Yo.

Decidí utilizar este método y empezar a registrar esas pequeñas cosas que me hacen sonreír. Y ha funcionado una vez más, además de ser la excusa perfecta para coger más el boli y dibujar (que esto también me hace más feliz).
