Last week I talked to you about second opportunities. Today I confess that the change with the pencil has been more subtle. I still feel tremendously comfortable with the mechanical pencil, but for some jobs, I use the pencils too. I know that this choice (pencil vs mechanical pencil) creates almost as much controversy as the use of sharpener or the cutter to sharpen pencils and colored pencils, so I want to share my experience, please tell us yours to continue learning 😉
Si la semana pasada te hablaba de cambios y cómo lo que ahora no te funciona puede que, con el tiempo, te sientas con ello como pez en el agua. Hoy te confieso que el cambio con el lápiz ha sido más sutil. Sigo sintiéndome tremendamente cómoda con el portaminas, pero para algunos trabajos recurro al lápiz de madera. Sé que esta elección (lápiz vs portaminas) crea casi tanta controvesia como el uso de sacapuntas o cuchilla para afilar lápices y colores de madera, así que hoy quiero compartir mi experiencia, por favor coméntanos la tuya para seguir aprendiendo 😉
As I say I can only speak from my own experience. This is unique and totally personal. Only through your own experience, you could know what best suits your needs, your hand, and skills. You can find magicians in the handling of both tools: Rebecca Dautremer with a mechanical pencil and Daniele Castellano with colored pencils sharpened with a cutter. In my case, I start from the basis that I have never learned to sharpen properly with a cutter, it is very likely that my obsession with pencil sharpeners have been born there.
Como digo sólo puedo hablar desde mi propia experiencia y esta es única y totalmente personal, sólo probando podrás saber lo que mejor se adapta a tus necesidades, tu mano y habilidades. Puedes encontrar magos en el manejo de ambas herramientas: Rebecca Dautremer con portaminas y Daniele Castellano con lápiz de madera afilado a cuchilla. En mi caso parto de la base de que nunca he aprendido a afilar correctamente con cuchilla y es muy probable que de ahí haya nacido mi obsesión por los sacapuntas.
At Susana’s workshop raised the debate between pencil and mechanical pencil, and I was surprised that the latter was left defenseless. I love the mechanical pencils, they seem comfortable and allow me a great versatility. I use different thicknesses from 0.35mm (my favorite until recently) to 5.6mm (one of the last to join the family). As for hardness, I now use from B to 6B, mostly. I have some 0.5mm with 2H mines but I hardly use it.
En el taller de Susana se planteó el debate entre lápiz y portaminas, y me sorprendió que éste último se quedara sin defensores. Me encantan los portaminas, me parecen cómodos y me permiten una gran versatilidad. Los uso de diferentes grosores desde el 0.35mm (mi favorito hasta hace muy poco) hasta el 5.6mm (uno de los últimos en incorporarse a la familia). En cuanto a durezas, ahora uso desde el B hasta el 6B, en su mayoría. Tengo algún 0.5mm con minas 2H pero casi no lo uso.
Whether I use wooden pencils or mechanical pencils, depending on what I’m working on, most of the time I need they are sharpened and that’s why I’ve been doing it with an extensive collection of pencil sharpeners. As the material is expensive, I keep the chips, to use them in some background or if it is only graphite of the brand Koh-I-Noor (in some stores know it like Gioconda) I keep it in a little boat to use it like a dust of graphite. The illustrator Marta Altés gives much life to her shavings.
Tanto si uso lápices de madera como si uso portaminas, según en lo que esté trabajando, la mayor parte de las veces necesito que esté bien afilado y por eso he ido haciéndome con una extensa colección de sacapuntas. Como el material es caro, voy guardando las virutas, para usarlas en algún fondo o si es únicamente grafito de la marca Koh-I-Noor (en algunas tiendas lo conocen como Gioconda) lo voy guardando en un botecito para usarlo como grafito en polvo. La ilustradora Marta Altés les da mucha vida a sus virutas.
The latest acquisition has been the three-hole sharpener: one orifice sharps the mine and wood, another only wood and a third only the lead. I bought it at Papersmith when I was still living in Leicester and even though I knew from the packing how much I would like this place. From the envelope that made me tell the postman «The pink enveloped is mine! I’m sure.» until the experience that was to remove stickers with letterpress and the complicit note of customers with an obsession for the pretty stationery, as well as call «the confession» to the invoice <3. Now that I have the luck to have this store in my new city and it has me crazy. I love how they have everything placed and their products that make you dream and desire.
La última adquisición ha sido el sacapuntas de tres agujeros: un hueco afila mina y madera, otro sólo la madera y un tercero sólo la mina. Lo compré en Papersmith, cuando aún vivía en Leicester y aunque ya por el packing intuía lo mucho que me gustaría este sitio. Desde el sobre que me hizo decirle al cartero «El sobre rosa es el mío, seguro», hasta la experiencia que fue sacarlo…, pegatinas con letterpress y la nota cómplice con los clientes obsesionados por la papelería bonita, así como llamar «la confesión» a la factura <3. Ahora que tengo la suerte de ternerla en mi ciudad y me tiene loca. Cómo tienen todo colocado y sus productos que te hacen soñar y desear.
I discovered the three-hole pencil sharpener on an Instagram live (I can not remember right now which illustrator recommended it) and I thought it was a great idea to take full advantage of the pencil. I hoped that, for its price, it would work a lot better (my favorite is still the Staedtler graphite). But the three-hole is useful when you need to sharpen only the wood or when the tip is already blunt, but the pencil does not need a complete sharpening.
El sacapuntas de tres agujeros lo descubrí en un directo de instagram (no recuerdo ahora mismo de qué ilustradora) y me pareció una idea genial para aprovechar el máximo del lápiz. Esperaba que, por su precio, afilara mucho mejor (mi favorito sigue siendo el Staedtler graphite). Pero sí es útil cuando necesitas afilar sólo la madera o cuando la punta ya está roma, pero el lápiz no necesita un afilado completo.
