«The eye itch was unbearable, he had not foreseen the loss of his diver’s glasses between those brackish waters. It was late now, his retinas were impregnated with that viscous liquid. I can hardly believe that a year has passed from this and that. I have lived in England for a year!!! This will be my second Inktober drew in British Lands. I am delighted to participate one year more feeling connected to illustrators from all over the world.

Casi no puedo creer que haya pasado un año de esto y que lleve un año viviendo en Inglaterra. Será mi segundo Inktober por estas tierras y me hace ilusión participar un año más y sentirme conectada a ilustradores de todo el mundo.

Learning from the Shaun Tan sketchbooks

I discovered this book at the School of Illustration and thanks to the Valladolid Public Library I had the pleasure of devouring it. I did not know the author, but I had seen some of his illustrations without knowing who was behind of them. Probably if you have the opportunity to have this book in your hands you will suffer a crush to it. This book is a selection of works that sleep into the sketchbooks of Shaun Tan.

Descubrí este libro en la Escuela de Ilustración y gracias a la Biblioteca Pública de Valladolid devorarlo con placer. No conocía al autor como tal, pero sí había consumido algunas de sus ilustraciones sin saber quién era el ilustrador tras ellas. Probablemente si tienes la oportunidad de tener este libro entre tus manos sufrirás un flechazo. Esta obra es en realidad una selección de trabajos que duermen en los bitácoras de Shaun Tan.

Over this time «The Bird King and other sketches» has crossed my path several times: in the Madrid Public Libraries, and last Christmas I was about to surrender to his cries from one of the shelves of the Waterstones at Oxford Street, but I decided to ignore his signals waiting for a better time after all the expenses that had during the moving to the UK …

Durante todo este tiempo «El Rey Pájaro y otros esbozos» se ha cruzado en mi camino varias veces: en las Bibliotecas Públicas de Madrid, y las pasadas Navidades estuve a punto de rendirme a sus gritos desde una de las estanterías de la Waterstones de Oxford Street, pero ignoré sus señales esperando un momento mejor tras todos los gastos que había traído la mudanza a Reino Unido…

When I decided to buy it I discovered with sadness that it was not being re-edited anymore… But, luckily and I could buy one of them used. It is in perfect condition. It still smells as new! Now, I can read it, reread it and use to inspire myself.

Cuando quise hacerme con él descubrí con tristeza que ya no se estaba editando… tuve suerte y conseguí uno de segunda mano en perfecto estado ¡aún olía a nuevo! Lo he leído, releído y aún sigo recurriendo a él para deleitarme.

This edition is a jewel in its selection of images and the texts.

Es una joya en su edición, selección y texto.

Thanks Shaun for teaching me that this is a background work, when I sometimes forget it, that the key is to train hard and never stop observing… thanks for making me see that the search is never finished.

I am in love with the strength and expressiveness of his pastel sketches and the atmospheres he manages to create.

Illustrate by touching the soul of the viewer.

He has resurrected my hobby to visit and draw in the museum.

Ha resucitado mi afición a visitar y dibujar en el museo.

At the end of the book, you find a useful glossary with the techniques he had used and the project to which they belong, something super useful to exploring techniques and materials.

Incluye al final un práctico glosario con las técnicas empleadas y el proyecto al que pertenecen, algo súper útil para explorar técnicas y materiales.

Before I had it I was already assiduous to my logbook, now I feel what I have heard so many times, and that I did not understand as now: to lose my sketchbook would be to get rid of a bit of me, maybe the most intimate, the most vulnerable and dreamy.

Antes de tenerlo ya era asidua al cuaderno de bitácora, ahora siento eso que tantas veces he escuchado, y que no comprendía como ahora: perder mi bitácora sería desprenderme de un trocito de mí, puede que el más íntimo, el más vulnerable y soñador.

My favorites tools for graphite illustrations

Last week I talked to you about second opportunities. Today I confess that the change with the pencil has been more subtle. I still feel tremendously comfortable with the mechanical pencil, but for some jobs, I use the pencils too. I know that this choice (pencil vs mechanical pencil) creates almost as much controversy as the use of sharpener or the cutter to sharpen pencils and colored pencils, so I want to share my experience, please tell us yours to continue learning 😉

Si la semana pasada te hablaba de cambios y cómo lo que ahora no te funciona puede que, con el tiempo, te sientas con ello como pez en el agua. Hoy te confieso que el cambio con el lápiz ha sido más sutil. Sigo sintiéndome tremendamente cómoda con el portaminas, pero para algunos trabajos recurro al lápiz de madera. Sé que esta elección (lápiz vs portaminas) crea casi tanta controvesia como el uso de sacapuntas o cuchilla para afilar lápices y colores de madera, así que hoy quiero compartir mi experiencia, por favor coméntanos la tuya para seguir aprendiendo 😉

As I say I can only speak from my own experience. This is unique and totally personal. Only through your own experience, you could know what best suits your needs, your hand, and skills. You can find magicians in the handling of both tools: Rebecca Dautremer with a mechanical pencil and Daniele Castellano with colored pencils sharpened with a cutter. In my case, I start from the basis that I have never learned to sharpen properly with a cutter, it is very likely that my obsession with pencil sharpeners have been born there.

Como digo sólo puedo hablar desde mi propia experiencia y esta es única y totalmente personal, sólo probando podrás saber lo que mejor se adapta a tus necesidades, tu mano y habilidades. Puedes encontrar magos en el manejo de ambas herramientas: Rebecca Dautremer con portaminas y Daniele Castellano con lápiz de madera afilado a cuchilla. En mi caso parto de la base de que nunca he aprendido a afilar correctamente con cuchilla y es muy probable que de ahí haya nacido mi obsesión por los sacapuntas.

At Susana’s workshop raised the debate between pencil and mechanical pencil, and I was surprised that the latter was left defenseless. I love the mechanical pencils, they seem comfortable and allow me a great versatility. I use different thicknesses from 0.35mm (my favorite until recently) to 5.6mm (one of the last to join the family). As for hardness, I now use from B to 6B, mostly. I have some 0.5mm with 2H mines but I hardly use it.

En el taller de Susana se planteó el debate entre lápiz y portaminas, y me sorprendió que éste último se quedara sin defensores. Me encantan los portaminas, me parecen cómodos y me permiten una gran versatilidad. Los uso de diferentes grosores desde el 0.35mm (mi favorito hasta hace muy poco) hasta el 5.6mm (uno de los últimos en incorporarse a la familia). En cuanto a durezas, ahora uso desde el B hasta el 6B, en su mayoría. Tengo algún 0.5mm con minas 2H pero casi no lo uso.

Whether I use wooden pencils or mechanical pencils, depending on what I’m working on, most of the time I need they are sharpened and that’s why I’ve been doing it with an extensive collection of pencil sharpeners. As the material is expensive, I keep the chips, to use them in some background or if it is only graphite of the brand Koh-I-Noor (in some stores know it like Gioconda) I keep it in a little boat to use it like a dust of graphite. The illustrator Marta Altés gives much life to her shavings.

Tanto si uso lápices de madera como si uso portaminas, según en lo que esté trabajando, la mayor parte de las veces necesito que esté bien afilado y por eso he ido haciéndome con una extensa colección de sacapuntas. Como el material es caro, voy guardando las virutas, para usarlas en algún fondo o si es únicamente grafito de la marca Koh-I-Noor (en algunas tiendas lo conocen como Gioconda) lo voy guardando en un botecito para usarlo como grafito en polvo. La ilustradora Marta Altés les da mucha vida a sus virutas.

The latest acquisition has been the three-hole sharpener: one orifice sharps the mine and wood, another only wood and a third only the lead. I bought it at Papersmith when I was still living in Leicester and even though I knew from the packing how much I would like this place. From the envelope that made me tell the postman «The pink enveloped is mine! I’m sure.» until the experience that was to remove stickers with letterpress and the complicit note of customers with an obsession for the pretty stationery, as well as call «the confession» to the invoice <3. Now that I have the luck to have this store in my new city and it has me crazy. I love how they have everything placed and their products that make you dream and desire.

La última adquisición ha sido el sacapuntas de tres agujeros: un hueco afila mina y madera, otro sólo la madera y un tercero sólo la mina. Lo compré en Papersmith, cuando aún vivía en Leicester y aunque ya por el packing intuía lo mucho que me gustaría este sitio. Desde el sobre que me hizo decirle al cartero «El sobre rosa es el mío, seguro», hasta la experiencia que fue sacarlo…, pegatinas con letterpress y la nota cómplice con los clientes obsesionados por la papelería bonita, así como llamar «la confesión» a la factura <3. Ahora que tengo la suerte de ternerla en mi ciudad y me tiene loca. Cómo tienen todo colocado y sus productos que te hacen soñar y desear.

I discovered the three-hole pencil sharpener on an Instagram live (I can not remember right now which illustrator recommended it) and I thought it was a great idea to take full advantage of the pencil. I hoped that, for its price, it would work a lot better (my favorite is still the Staedtler graphite). But the three-hole is useful when you need to sharpen only the wood or when the tip is already blunt, but the pencil does not need a complete sharpening.

El sacapuntas de tres agujeros lo descubrí en un directo de instagram (no recuerdo ahora mismo de qué ilustradora) y me pareció una idea genial para aprovechar el máximo del lápiz. Esperaba que, por su precio, afilara mucho mejor (mi favorito sigue siendo el Staedtler graphite). Pero sí es útil cuando necesitas afilar sólo la madera o cuando la punta ya está roma, pero el lápiz no necesita un afilado completo.

Training, take the line for a walk

Before I knew myself like now, I believed that some things were and would be immutable. I thought the tastes would not change, either the sensations… Luckily, I love to explore and get dirty my hands. I did not get stuck in that imaginary limit.

Antes de conocerme como ahora, creía que algunas cosas eran y serían inmutables. Que los gustos no cambiarían, ni las sensaciones… Por suerte me encanta explorar y mancharme las manos y no me quedé en ese límite imaginario.

Some experiences make me aware of this change like the rediscovery of drawing using a single line, as did Giacometti.

Una de las experiencias que me han hecho consciente de este cambio, ha sido el redescubrimiento del boceto de una sóla línea, como hacía Giacometti.

The first time someone proposed that was in the School of Illustration. Then, the exercise of drawing without lifting the pencil from the paper, I felt it uncomfortable, the results and the sensation when I had been drawing did not convince me anything.

La primera vez que me propusieron en la Escuela de Ilustración este ejercicio de dibujar sin levantar el lápiz del papel ni una sola vez, me pareció incómodo, los resultados y la sensación dibujando no me convencieron nada.

With Mariajo I tried again, and the feeling had not changed. I thought that technique was not for me. Ha,ha,ha!

Con Mariajo lo volví a intentar, y la sensación no había cambiado. Creía que esa técnica no era para mí ¡Ja!

I thought that until I joined the course with Adolfo Serra on Domestika. The teacher proposes this exercise to training our line of the drawing. Adolfo convinced me and I decided to give it another chance, explore and play with it…

Hasta que me apunté al curso de Domestika con Adolfo Serra, uno de los ejercicios que propone es este. Adolfo me convenció y decidí darle otra oportunidad, explorar y jugar…

… and, Oh surprise! Not only I feel comfortable drawing with a single line. I believe that the result, somehow, contains the essence of the portrayed. And I have not achieved this with other drawing techniques, until now.

…y ¡oh, sorpresa! No solo me sentí cómoda, sino que el resultado de alguna manera contenía la esencia del retratado, cosa que con otras técnicas de dibujo no he conseguido, hasta ahora.

Thanks Adolfo for re-proposing this challenge and for the course, that although I still have not been able to get all the juice I want, I know I will do it even if it’s in small bits 🙂

Taking out the colors of Huelva

Hi!!!!
I was so looking forward to seeing you again here, every Monday. It smells of summer, even here in England. They have been intense months for me and, like many people, I have waited for September to take a few days of rest, good company and disconnection. What a desire to gain momentum in the face of this last quarter of the year …

While I bring you a summer post, light and full of color (just a little bit unsaturated if not, it would not be me 😉

¡¡¡¡Hola!!!!
Qué ganas tenía de volver a verte de nuevo por aquí cada lunes. Huele a verano, incluso aquí en Inglaterra y, para mi ha sido un verano intenso y, como muchos, he esperado a septiembre para tomarme unos días de descanso, buena compañía y desconexión. Qué ganas de coger impulso de cara a este ultimo trimestre del año…

Mientras te traigo un post veraniego, ligero y lleno de color (un poco desaturado, si no, no sería yo 😉

I started the summer traveling to Huelva. That this city and its people have me in love is not a secret. Every time I go I discover something new. Surprises, suitcases, and notebooks full of tangible and intangible treasures on the way home.

Empecé el verano viajando a Huelva. Que esta ciudad y su gente me tienen enamorada no es un secreto. Cada vez que voy descubro algo nuevo. Sorpresas, maletas y cuadernos llenos de tesoros tangibles e intangibles a la vuelta a casa.

It was an amazing week, full of energy and if someone tells me that I would do so much in such a short time, I had not believed it. Meet people and open doors that communicate islands with related concerns… You will be returned home with the smile installed.

Fue una semana alucinante, llena de energía y en la que si me dicen que voy a hacer tanto en tan poco tiempo no me lo creo. Conocer gente y puertas que se abren comunicando islas con inquietudes afines… te hace volver con la sonrisa instalada.

The excuse: the Felix Scheinberger Workshop in Huelva.

The consequence of all the vortex: take the plane back in the last minute, and forget all my notes and sketches of the workshop, they still are been there (it is in safe hands). As soon as I recover the material that I forgot, I promise to bring you my experience of what was cooked there in the workshop.

La consecuencia de toda la vorágine: coger el avión de vuelta por los pelos y que la mitad de las cosas, apuntes y bocetos del taller incluidos, se me quedaran (a buen recaudo) allí. En cuanto recupere el material que olvidé allí, prometo acercarte mi experiencia de lo que se coció en el taller.

Statement of intents, after the Susana’s workshop

Susana’s workshop awakened in me a new way of working: illustrating from the searching and experimentation. A work aligned with me, more personal and stronger. I feel that the lack of «punch» that Cristina Camarena says about my work is behind this kind of process.

El taller de Susana, despertó en mí una nueva manera de trabajar: ilustrando desde la búsqueda y lal experimentación. Un trabajo alineado conmigo, más personal y con más fuerza. Presiento que esa falta de «punch» de la que me hablaba Cristina Camarena pasa por trabajar desde ahí.

Today’s post I want to be a statement of intentions, a little bit that serves as a snack for the new season.

El post de hoy quiero sea una declaración de intenciones, un bocadito que sirva de aperitivo para la nueva temporada.

This summer I need time spent researching and producing. I hope you understand it.

Este verano necesito tiempo dedicado a investigar y producir. Espero que lo entiendas.

I remember the summers of my childhood and adolescence like those two months that I was looking forward to all year long because they brought me freedom and special friends with whom to share time and experiences.

Recuerdo los veranos de mi infancia y adolescencia como esos dos meses que esperaba con ilusión durante todo el año, porque ellos me traían libertad y amigos especiales con los que compartir tiempo y experiencias.

Imagine this summer like those, with changes and searches, and I desire to live it.

My new color palette, after reading to Felix Scheinberger

As I told you when I was in Huelva at Susana’s workshop, Gustavo told us with emotion that for the new season he had been able to take El Taller Artístico workshop to Felix Scheinberger.

Como te dije estando en Huelva en el taller de Susana, Gustavo nos comentó con emoción que para la nueva temporada había conseguido llevar a El Taller Artístico a Felix Scheinberger.

I remember clearly when Gustavo held out me the book Urban Watercolor Sketching. I felt trapped. I told him: Please, Gustavo, I do not want to lose it!!. The vacancies flew, but C and I have ours. And I’m dying to grow, learn and shelter (I want to say… enjoy ;P)

Recuerdo con nitidez a Gustavo tendiéndome el libro Acuarela Para Urbansketchers y sentirme atrapada. Por favor, Gustavo, ¡¡no me lo quiero perder!! Las plazas volaron, pero C y yo tenemos la nuestra. Y me muero de ganas por conocerle, aprender y guarrear (digooooo… disfrutar ;P)

On the way home I eat up the book and got a lot of ideas like when it occurred to me to use your idea of making stamps with potatoes to spread my stamps and use them with watercolors.

De vuelta a casa devoré el libro y saqué un montón de pequeñas ideas como cuando se me ocurrió usar su idea de hacer sellos con patatas para untar mis sellos y poder usarlos con acuarelas.

The topic I want to talk about in this post starts when I was while reading the book, Felix talks a lot about color and going with eyes wide open to create our own color palettes, and illustrates transitions from one color to another. From the palette to find new colors, the example of the book is from ocher to turquoise, two of my favorite colors and I use more in my palette, I tried it and then I wanted to make a color chart of transitions of all my box of watercolors.

Lo que en este post quiero contarte empezó mientras leía el libro, Felix habla mucho acerca del color y de ir con los ojos bien abiertos a crearnos nuestras propias paletas de color, e ilustra transiciones de un color a otro de la paleta para encontrar nuevos colores, el ejemplo del libro es desde el ocre al turquesa, dos de mis colores favoritos y que más utilizo en mi paleta, lo probé y entonces quise hacerme una carta de color de transiciones de toda mi caja de acuarelas.

I prepared transitions of 14 dots, using permutations of all my watercolors.

Preparé transiciones de 14 puntitos, utilizando permutaciones de todas mis acuarelas.

The experiment took more than a week while drying and I do other jobs.

El experimento me llevó más de una semana, mientras secaban y hacía otros trabajos.

The best thing about this experiment is that I discovered new skin colors, different from the ones I already use.

Lo mejor de este experimento es que descubrí nuevos colores para piel, diferentes de los que ya uso.

Errors that makes me fall me in love.

Errores que enamoran.

And new colors that I love that have been created from mixtures that I would never have thought to mix if not for this methodical process.

Y nuevos colores que me enamoran que se han creado a partir de mezclas que nunca se me hubiera ocurrido mezclar si no es por este metódico proceso.

Finally, and although it seems obvious, I had not noticed the texture, the grain left by the blues, which I believed to be my palette (I use these Cotman watercolors from Windsor and Newton) and that a few days ago I discovered on the Instagram of Iraville. She loves that effect and she uses other different watercolors, so I have come to the conclusion that it is the blue pigment, so any mix you make using blue (especially with the ultramarine blue) will have this very unique effect.

Por último, y aunque parezca obvio, no había notado la textura, el grano que dejan los azules, que creía propios de mi paleta (yo uso estas acuarelas Cotman de Windsor and Newton) y que hace unos días descubrí en el instagram de Iraville. Ella ama ese efecto y ella usa otras acuarelas diferentes, por lo que he llegado a la conclusión que es el pigmento azul, así que toda mezcla que hagas usando azul (sucede especialmente con el azul ultramar) tendrá este efecto tan característico.

Proust Questionnaire 3: Fernando J. López

The very first thing, to apologize for my absence, first I had the flu and after that, a torticollis that I have had K.O. Lo primerísimo, pedirte disculpas por mi ausencia, primero fue una gripe y luego una tortícolis que me han tenido K.O. Por todo esto y porque tengo cosas que compartir contigo, pero necesito tiempo para prepararlas como te mereces, durante el mes de junio publicaré quincenamente (un lunes sí habrá post y al siguiente no).

Today, I bring you the third chapter of the project that together with Raquel began at the end of 2016: her version of the Proust Questionnaire. The person interviewed responses to the questionnaire adapted for La Lectora De Guermantes and I illustrate the interviews. Again, to read what our third interviewee has answered, we will wait just a few days, ~~until Sunday 3rd June~~. La Lectora De Guermantes says, that there have been some unforeseen events, and you will have to wait until Friday, June 9th. We are waiting for you! Hoy te traigo la tercera entrega del proyecto que comenzábamos a finales de 2016: retomar el Cuestionario Proust. La persona entrevistada responde al custionario adaptado para la Lectora de Guermantes y yo pongo las ilustraciones a las entrevistas que Raquel publica en su blog. It has been a real pleasure to get closer to Fernando. He has just published a book and will be signing the Book Fair in Madrid. Currently, I live far away but I would love to get closer and meet him. I leave here the schedules, in case you want to go and you can do it. Ha sido un auténtico placer acercarme poco a poco a Fernando. Acaba de sacar libro y estará firmando en la Feria del libro de Madrid. A mi me pilla un poco lejos pero me encantaría acercarme, te dejo aquí los horarios por si te apetece y puedes. This time the process has been hard, starting from the concepts of the questionnaire from Fernando, sketch to sketch I went closer until the pieces I created were fitting. I really want you to read the interview because I feel that without it, the illustration loses a lot.

For the Illustration of Puño, I followed the process: documentation, brainstorming, sketching, testing, and layout. For the illustration of Marina, I approached to the illustration from the image. Now, it has been a mixture of both, drawing to Fernando, but also working the concepts, searching documentation…

Si para la ilustración de Puño, tuve una idea y seguí el proceso: documentación, lluvia de ideas, boceto, pruebas y arte final. Y para la ilustración de Marina me acerqué a la ilustración desde la imagen. En esta ocasión ha sido una mezcla de ambas, dibujando a Fernando, pero trabajando también el concepto, labor de documentación…
